A Big Milestone

No matter what day it is mom, I think of you and miss you each and every single day.  Today was no different, but today you were not just on my mind because I was missing you and wishing you and wishing you were here but because something special and important occurred that I would have loved to share with you.  Today marked the first time I was ever interviewed on the subject of hummingbirds.  I was to do a phone interview and share my knowledge of hummingbirds with others.

You and I always shared a common fascination and interest in the hummingbirds.  There were so many times that we would be outside sitting on the back porch watching the hummingbirds with such amazement and utter fascination and enjoyment.   At that time, I didn’t have the knowledge of hummingbirds that do now to share with you or others.   How I wish that you were still here for me to share with you the knowledge and information that I have since gained though my time of discovering all about the amazing creature known as the hummingbird.  I know that you would have loved to hear all the information that I was able to share with people on the subject of hummingbirds.

Every creature in nature plays some of role in nature.  You would be asking what is the hummingbird’s role? Well, I now know the answer to that question.  The hummingbird has two very important purposes within nature.  One vital role that the hummingbird serves is as a pollinator, because many types of plants and tress would not be able to reproduce without the aid of the hummingbird.  Also hummingbirds serve to transport resources among tropical and temperate ecosystems that are located thousands of miles apart.

I remember you often wondering why only certain hummingbirds had the brightly colored throat feathers.  Well, I now know that is only the male hummingbirds that have these bright throat feathers.  These feathers serve two very important purposes:  to help the male attract a female and to help them defend their territory from other bird.  The females are attracted by the feathers while other males are repelled by it.  The male will use their feathers as part of their territorial displays.

These are just a few of the topics covered during today’s interview.  While I can’t share my knowledge of hummingbirds with you personally, I’m proud to say that I will soon be able to share today’s interview with others.  Once the recording is available, I will share with all of you how and where to your copy.

Thanks for letting me share this milestone with you.  Getting to this point has been a long time goal and dream and so this day is very special to me.  I look forward to continuing to grow in my knowledge of hummingbirds and sharing it with you.  Here’s to the feature and a world of endless possibilities!

The Extermination and Makeover

Well, I’m finally back up and running once again.  Sorry for the long period without any new post but it was completely unavoidable and beyond my control.  Let me explain.

Because of work that needed to be completed, I was without Internet access for quite sometime.  Also, this down time was used to help me do some much needed "spring" cleaning and making over of my home.  Things look  absolutely fabulous and I now have so much less clutter.  Yea!  I am trying hard to reform my habit of being a pack rat and holding on to things I really have no use for.

To all who read this blog, thank you for stopping by and please visit the site often.  Please forgive my long absence from posting but it couldn’t be helped and I wanted to explain why it occurred.

What is the Longest Hummingbird Mirgration?

It  is important to note that not all species of hummingbirds migrate.  Of those species of hummingbirds that do migrate, the exact length of the migratory journey will depend on the exact species of hummingbird you are referring,

Today’s post offers a bit of hummingbird trivia.  I hope you will enjoy discovering this bit of hummingbird trivia.  I seemed to have inherited my love of hummingbirds and trivia facts from my mom, so this post makes me think of her because she would be interested in the the information on which species of hummingbird has the longest migratory journey.

The Rufous Hummingbird is the species with the longest migratory journey,  It is up to 3000 miles in length because its breeding range is in Alaska and its winter range is in Mexico.   No wonder hummingbirds need to gain so much weight just prior to making their migratory journey!

Happy Independence Day

July 4th marks the anniversary of American independence.  It is also the day that would have marked my grandmother’s (my dad’s mom) 100th birthday, but she passed way in 2000.   Whenever I think of my grandmother I can’t help but remember her love of watermelon, tomatoes, and fried chicken.  Also, I remember her telling me the story of how as a young girl she thought the fireworks were in honor of her birthday.  I don’t know at what age see realized this wasn’t true, but she always said that realizing this made her feel a bit sad.  Today is also a day that all Americans should remember the freedoms that we enjoy and thank those who help us enjoy them (regardless of whether they served in the military in the past or are currently doing so).

However and wherever you, your friends and family choose to mark the occasion, I hope you have an enjoyable and blessed July 4th.  It is a great day to have a backyard cookout, go to the beach, watch a fireworks show, or just spend some quality time with those that you love.  I myself am enjoying a nice relaxing day at home watching movies and spending some quality time with my boyfriend, Donald.  So, you could say I’m enjoying my own little slice of heaven on Earth.

I wish all of you who visit this site a very happy and blessed Independence Day on this July 4th, 2009.  I am thankful to each of you who take the time to regularly visit this site.  Take the chance to enjoy the great outdoors and all the beauty that nature has to offer today.  I am also thankful to live in America and enjoy all of life’s freedoms and blessings that are the result of doing so.

Doctor Orders Bedrest

My family doctor has ordered bed rest for me.  I must remain in bed except for being allowed to eat and use the bathroom.  This is because the swelling in my right leg is not improving as it should without my legs being elevated.  The goal is that the bed rest will allow the swelling in the right leg to decrease enough to allow a compression stocking to be put on the right leg.

On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, I have an appointment to see a Vascular Surgeon about the issues with my right leg.  It isn’t known what he will have to say about the matter, but I am hoping he will be able to successfully improve my condition.

Technically, I shouldn’t even be writing this post, because it requires me to be up for a little while.  I wanted to explain why there would not be any post for a while.  As of now, there is no way for me to know when I will once again be able to write another post.  Sorry about that.  Just know that I will do so just as soon as it is allowed by my doctor that I am no longer confined to bed rest.
