Perches Are Needed in a Hummingbird Garden

Yes, hummingbirds do feed frequently, but hummingbirds also have a need for perches on feeders and in in your hummingbird garden. This post will explain what all can act as these perches and why it is important why your hummingbird garden provide this to the hummingbirds that visit your garden.

Hummingbirds look for perches on which to rest and preen whenever they are not feeding. These perches can be in the form thin vines, trellises, wires, clotheslines, or even multiple levels of vegetation that will also provide a source of shelter for the hummingbirds. Due to their extremely aggressive nature, the perches should also provide a good view of the hummingbird’s territory. If you have plants and shrubs on which the hummingbirds will perch, these should be placed near food sources which are known to attract hummingbirds to ensure the best possible success with attracting the hummingbirds.

As I sit here writing this post, I cannot help but think of my mom. You see, my mom did many things to attract the hummingbirds to our yard, but I cannot recall that she did anything except providing feeders with perches to give the hummingbirds a place to perch. As a result, I feel certain that she would have benefited from the information contained in this post to have helped her towards an even greater success with attracting hummingbirds to our yard. It is my hope that you will also benefit from the information contained in this post as well.

What is an Immature Hummingbird?

If you are someone who regularly observes hummingbirds, have you ever before thought about what the term immature means? until I was recently asked about this by someone, I myself had never before given the matter much consideration. After doing some research, here is what I can now share with you.

The term immature refers to a young bird which is independent but has yet to complete the molt into their adult plumage. You may now be wondering what is exactly meant by the term molt. Well, I have that answer for you as well. Molt is the normal cycle of loss and replacement of feathers.

I hope this post helps you understand what is meant by an immature bird. As I was writing this post, thoughts of my mom came to mind because I can imagine her wanting to know just how to determine if a bird is immature or not. If she were still alive today, I would be able to share this information with her as well.

One last thing, I do not normally like a post to require the use of so many definitions, but there was no other way to write this post without the use of these terms. Thanks for your understanding and please visit the site again.

Basic Facts About Hummingbird Nest

Many people will never have the opportunity to see a hummingbird nest firsthand. I myself have never personally had the opportunity to do so and I am certain that my mom also never had the opportunity to do so either. As I sit here writing this, I cannot help think of my mom, because this is something that we both would have enjoyed. Who knows, maybe one day I myself will be fortunate enough to witness this marvel of nature and construction firsthand.

You may be wondering why it is that many people never witness a hummingbird’s nest personally. Well, I have the answer for you. The reason for this is usually because people do not know where to look for a nest or what to look for. With this in mind, I thought I would share with you some basic facts about a hummingbirds nest.

Most hummingbird species build a cup-shaped nest which is located on the branch of a tree or shrub, but there are a few tropical species of hummingbirds which normally attach their nests to leaves. The size of the nest will depend on the size of the species of hummingbird. The nest can be smaller than half of a walnut shell to several centimeters in diameter.

Many hummingbird species use spider silk is used to bind the nest material together and secure the structure to its support. Silk is used because it allows the nest to expand with the growing young. Usually, a hummingbird will lay two white eggs. Incubation lasts 15 to 19 days, depending on the hummingbird species, ambient temperature, and female attentiveness to the nest.

The mother feeds the nestlings on small arthropods and nectar by inserting her bill into the open mouth of a nestling and regurgitating the food into its crop.
