My Birthday 2009

Hello Everyone:

This is Hummingbird here. Today is a very special day for me; it is my 44Th birthday. This day has been extra special and meaningful because the past few months have been rather challenging for me health-wise. Things seem to be gradually improving with regard to my heath. I’m truly thankful for that!

I wish to offer a heartfelt thank you to all of those who have helped make this day so very special for me. You know who you are and how you helped make this day so very special, but I hope that you know how much I love and appreciate each of you so very much.

I loved spending time with my friends and family on this day. Thanks for all your love as well as all the wonderful gifts that were given to me. For any of you have followed this blog for any length of time now, you may know that my favorite desert is chocolate cream pie and that this was something that my mom would usually make for my birthday while she was still alive. My mom passed away several years ago so that is something I had missed having in recent years. Well, I’m happy to report that this year I received not one but two chocolate cream pies, two slices of cheese cake and even some cookies for desert. A dessert lover’s dream come true! Not to worry though, as I will be sharing the various desserts with my friends, as it would be impossible not to mention bad for my waistline to eat all those desserts myself!

I hope that you won’t mind that this post isn’t about hummingbirds. I wanted to share with you a little bit about how I spent my birthday. While I always feel extremely blessed to have such wonderful friends and family, a day like today truly makes me appreciate them that much more. Thanks everyone for all you do for me and for being such a huge blessing in my life. My life would not be the same without each of you in it!

Long Absence Number 2 Explained

This is Hummingbird here.I am sorry that there has not been any new post in quite sometime, but the reason for it was quite unexpected and could not be avoided; I was once again recently hospitalized without warning.Once again, my right leg was extremely swollen, reddish, bruised and hot to the touch so I was readmitted to the hospital.

It was determined that I still had a condition known as Cellulitis, an infection that gets into the body often as the result of a cut, scratch or bug bite. The doctors still are uncertain as to why I developed the condition in the first place. As a result, I was then admitted to the hospital once again and given massive doses of IV antibiotics for the next several days. This time a variety of test were also run but unfortunately there is no definitive answers on how to teat and prevent the condition.

I am not yet back to feeling full strength yet. I am still weak and tire quite easily and even still have some discomfort in my leg and foot. At the moment, the doctors and I are left trying to find the necessary answers. Please pray that the necessary answers will soon be found, because this condition is extremely painful and difficult to continually endure.

Please forgive that there have not been any new post for so long, but my absence could not be avoided or predicted.

The Long Absence Explained

Hello Everyone:

This is Hummingbird here. I am sorry that there has not been any new post in quite sometime, but the reason for it was quite unexpected and could not be avoided; I was hospitalized without warning. In the very early hours of last Wednesday morning, 12:30 a.m. or so, I had a friend call an ambulance to take me to one of our local hospitals. My right leg was extremely swollen, reddish, bruised and hot to the touch and I knew that the apparent condition was beyond my ability to handle and deal with own my own.

After arriving at the hospital, I was taken to the ER where I remained for approximately 11 hours before being seen by a doctor. In the meantime, I was eventually taken to have an ultrasound on the leg to rule out that the problem was the result of a blood clot in the leg. Thankfully, that test came back negative for the blood clot. Now, we were back at ground zero in having any idea what the actual condition may have been. This was not fun, especially since I was in excruciating pain but could have nothing to reduce the level of it until after being seen by the doctor on call.

By the time the doctor on call finally sees me, I have now been there in the ER for approximately 11 hours! That is an eternity when you don’t feel well at all! The ER doctor determined that I had a condition known as Cellulitis, an infection of the blood that is the result of a cut, scratch or bug bite. As a result, I was then admitted to the hospital and given massive doses of IV antibiotics for the next several days.

Yesterday, Monday afternoon, I was finally released from the hospital. Yea! While I am feeling much better then when I was admitted to the hospital, I am not yet back to full strength yet. I am still weak and tire quite easily and even still have some discomfort in my leg and foot. That should all improve in the days ahead.

Sorry for my long absence without any previous warning but the situation was beyond my control and could not have been predicted. Hope you understand.

One more thing, I know that Mother’s Day has passed, but since I wasn’t here to acknowledge it I want to take this belated opportunity to remember and honor the memory of my mother. I miss you not only on Mother’s Day mom but each and every day since you passed away. You are never far from my thoughts. I hope that you know that you were a great mom and that you would be be proud of the women I have become and the life I’ve created for myself.

Mother’s Day 2009 also marked the one year anniversary for this blog. Hummingbirds for Mom was created as a way to combine the love my mom and I shared for hummingbirds with my desire to do so in a unique way that would also allow me to honor my mother’s memory. I think these two things have been accomplished quite well thus far and I look forward to doing it indefinitely into the future.

Thank you to all who visit this blog and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. I just wanted to explain why there were no new post for quite some time. Thanks in advance for your understanding regarding this matter.

How lightweight is a Hummingbird Band?

Here is a little known and astounding piece of hummingbird trivia.  It takes an amazing 5,500 hummingbird bands to weigh one ounce.  As a trivia lover and hummingbird enthusiast, I just had to share this obscure fact with all of you.  This piece of trivia would have fascinated my mother also.  Since the birds themselves don’t weigh too much I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked by the very large number of bands required to weigh one ounce, but nevertheless I find myself shaking my head in utter amazement.  What about you?

Bright Flowers Mean Sweeter Nectar

It is probably universally known that hummingbirds are attracted to red, but it turns out that there is a real reason to explain why hummingbirds prefer brightly colored flowers.  So what is this reason?  In many cases, although there are exceptions, the brighter the flower the sweeter the nectar which is inside it.

I find this discovery quite surprising and interesting.  I’m always amazed by the fascinating information which I continually discover on my quest to constantly add to my knowledge of the fascinating creature known as the hummingbird.

This discovery is the kind of fact about hummingbirds that my mom would have enjoyed knowing.  I hope you also like it as well.  What else would you like to discover about hummingbirds?  Let me know and the topic may result in a future post.
