The Anna’s Hummingbird

The Anna’s hummingbird is the most common hummingbird found in Southern California. It is also one of three species of hummingbirds, along with Allen’s and Costa’s that are permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada. Also, unlike most other species of hummingbirds, they have a minimal song. If you find these few facts interesting and would like to discover much more interesting information about this particular bird, then please continue to read the rest of this post.

When trying to identify this species of hummingbird here is what to look for. Anna’s hummingbirds are iridescent bronzy green above and grayish white below, with a varying amount of green wash at the flanks. The males have a deep rose-red crown and gorget that extends to the sides of the neck. The females may have some red feathers at the throat, but none on the crown. The wings and tail of the female are dark, and the tail feathers are tipped with white.

Here is a very interesting fact about the Anna’s hummingbird: it was originally only found on the Pacific slope from Baja California to San Francisco. This bird has increased its population and expanded its breeding range in recent years to Vancouver, British Colombia, and east to southern Arizona. This expansion is believed to be due to the introduction of exotic flowering plants, especially Eucalyptus, red-hot-poker and tree tobacco, and by the proliferation of hummingbird feeders.

The Anna’s hummingbird likes to use the bird bath. They like to get a drink on hot days. They especially like bird baths that drip as they can hover and sip water as it runs over the edge. They will also perch on the edge and drink as other birds do but they only sit still for a minute.

Anna’s hummingbirds have an unusually early breeding season. It is believed that the plant gooseberry and the hummingbird have evolved together, which may help explain why a favorite native food source of the Anna’s hummingbird is red gooseberry, an abundant plant that flowers early in spring. This species of hummingbird also consumes more insects than any other North American hummingbirds, catching small flying insects on the wing in the manner of a flycatcher, or by hover-gleaning among the leaves and twigs of trees. Or they find sustenance at the sap wells of sapsuckers or by pilfering insects from the webs of spiders. The Anna’s hummingbird eats more arthropods than most hummingbirds.

The breeding season begins in December and lasts until May or June. The males arrive first and begin defending territories associated with rich and dependable food sources. The females arrive a few weeks later and establish separate territories. The females then build lichen-camouflaged nests of made from plant down and spider webs. When the nest is partially built, the male performs his courtship display. First, he hovers before the female, then rises high, sometimes pausing to sing a thin, squeaky warble of a song before again diving toward her, tracing a deep arc and making a loud, explosive noise at the bottom of the dive. Incubation of the eggs takes about two weeks before the naked and blind nestlings hatch. After another three weeks, the young may leave the nest, although they remain dependent upon the mother for food for a few days. Juveniles rapidly develop territorial behavior, sometimes establishing their own feeding territories shortly after leaving the nests.

The Anna’s hummingbird is one of three species of hummingbird that are permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada. These are very small birds. The average weight of the male is 4.31 grams, while female weighs an average of 4.07 grams. The Anna’s is the largest hummingbird seen on the west coast. Of course, this is not saying much–it is only four inches tall.

“The Hummingbird” by Emily Dickinson

I hope you will enjoy the poem that follows.  I had never before read it, but I really enjoyed it.  I like how it captures the state of almost constant motion of the hummingbird.  To me, the hummingbird is one of natures brightest little jewels and I so enjoy their beauty.  Enjoy the poem everyone!  May it serve to remind you of the great beauty that nature has to offer.

 A Route of Evanescence
With a revolving Wheel—
A Resonance of Emerald—
A Rush of Cochineal—
And every Blossom on the Bush
Adjusts its tumbled Head—
The mail from Tunis, probably,
An easy Morning’s Ride—

Yet More Amazing Hummingbird Facts

This post will provide the reader with some interesting and amazing facts about hummingbirds that you might not yet know. Mom, this is the kind of information that you and I always enjoyed discovering, so this was written with all the people like us in mind.   You, mom,  are no longer with us in person, but I would like to believe that you are looking down on me and are aware of all the work that I’m doing about hummingbirds. It is my hope that anyone reading this will find the information as fascinating as I myself did.

Hummingbirds have the ability to hover better than any other species of bird due to the unusual structure of their wings. They have the ability to do so because their wings are permanently fixed and rigid, except at the shoulder joint, which allows the wing to move freely in all directions.

When hovering, a hummingbird’s wing moves forward, and then the leading edge rotates nearly 180 degrees and moves back again. This wing movement causes the tips of the wings to trace a horizontal figure eight in the air.

Hummingbirds are often known as living jewels. This is because the feathers of the hummingbird are the most specialized of any bird feathers. On the throat of a hummingbird it is only the outer third of each feather that is iridescent, due to the fact that it is this part of the feather that contains platelets which are filled with air bubbles. The platelets partially reflect back light, thus causing the brilliant colors that are seen on hummingbirds.

One interesting fact that I discovered while doing research for this article is that mites will hitchhike on a hummingbird. Mites grow and reproduce within the blooms of many flowers by feeding on the nectar and pollen of these plants. Whenever a flower stops blooming and no longer contains nectar, the mite must move on and they do so by catching a ride while on the hummingbird.

As a hummingbird sucks nectar from a flower, the mites run onto the bird’s bill and into the hummingbird’s nostrils. The mite only remains on the hummingbird for a short time, until the hummingbird visits another flower of the same species as the one the mite just left.

Albino hummingbirds exist. Albino hummingbirds are not a separate species of hummingbird. Albinism is caused by a genetic change that prevents the formation of dark-colored pigment in feathers. This is a very rare occurrence. There are varying degrees of albinism.    Typically, albino hummingbirds don’t live long. This is because they often have poor eyesight and more brittle feathers then other hummingbirds and this causes them to have a reduced flying ability.

I hope that this post has helped you discover some very fascinating facts about hummingbirds. Believe me, there is no shortage of interesting information about hummingbirds to be found these days. Both my mom and I always loved discovering new and interesting information or trivia facts, so I know how much this information would have truly fascinated her. I hope that you will enjoy it as well. Is there anything here that shocked or amazed you to discover? If so or if you have something to add, please feel free to add your comment. We want to hear from you, because your comments help add valuable content to this blog.

Flower Pot Choices for Hanging Baskets

When using hanging baskets to attract hummingbirds, there are other considerations besides specific plant characteristics that you must consider if you are to have success at it. This is what this today’s blog post will help you discover. After all, your goal is to try and attract the hummingbirds and to try and entire them to feed while visiting your plants. That is how this particular topic relates to hummingbird feeding, so I hope you will keep these suggestions in mind if you should decide to try using hanging baskets as a way to try and draw the hummingbirds to your yard.

You will want to consider the type of planter that you will use. There are many varieties of planters available. The most popular hanging planters are made of wire, terra cotta, glazed ceramic, wood or plastic. One choice is a wire mesh basket lined with sphagnum moss and filled with potting soil.   Another choice is the use of unglazed terra cotta pots. With this type of flower pot, you must water them frequently and hang them securely from a sturdy support.

Ceramic hanging pots come in many colors, including red or orange, which can be used to attract hummingbirds. This type of planter often has a saucer to catch water and therefore help the plant retain moisture. You can also use wooden containers that have been painted red or orange and that are made from rot resistant redwood, cedar or cypress. Plastic pots are another alternative in which to create your hanging baskets, because they are lightweight, versatile and affordable.

It is also important to remember that any type of hanging basket will weigh more when wet than when it is not wet.   It is important that the hanging basket be fastened securely overhead with sturdy hooks or screw eyes over a strong support. If your pot doesn’t have its own hanger, use galvanized wire or chain to suspend it from the desired location. Make sure to place the hanging basket in a spot that will offer enough support for the plant and won’t place too much stain on the surface below.

Hanging baskets are a simple, effective and space-saving way for anyone to attract hummingbirds to their yard. It is my hope that the information contained here will help you realize that you too can enjoy seeing hummingbirds in your yard, no matter how limited the amount of space available to you.

Choosing Plants for Hanging Baskets

Even if you don’t have a lot of space in which to plant flowers, you can easily and effectively attract hummingbirds through the use of hanging baskets. This is a simple and effective way to beautify your yard and attract one of nature’s most amazing creatures. It is my hope that the information which follows will help you to discover how to effectively use hanging baskets as a way to attract and enjoy these truly amazing birds.

It is very important that you select the right flowers. You will want to choose flowers that will thrive in hanging baskets and that will also attract the hummingbirds.

You will want to select plants that have nectar-rich tubular shaped blooms on them. Plants such as penstemon, salvia and petunia are excellent choices, because the hummingbirds can easily access the nectar due to their long, narrow bills and tongues.

The plant form is also very important. You will want to select flowers that stick out from a plant’s foliage, by either protruding or dangling. This is important because hummingbirds normally feed while hovering, so this will provide ample air space so the birds’ beating wings easily clear any leaves.

The plants you select for use in your hanging baskets should offer a wide variety of color. Many people often associate the color red with helping to attract hummingbirds. Red is a color which hummingbirds can see from a great distance, so offering flowers that are nectar-rich and come in various shades of red should always attract their attention. However, flowers of almost any color, including orange, pink, purple, white and yellow will also attract hummingbirds and cause them to feed from these nectar-rich plants.

The quantity of blooms a plant produces will also play an important role in attracting hummingbirds. When selecting plants, you will want to choose plants with multiple flowers in open clusters. These types of plants are more appealing than plants like hibiscus that feature a small selection of large blooms.

You will also want to consider the bloom time of the plants you select. Choosing plants that have a long bloom time will help provide the hummingbirds with a source of nectar for an extended length of time. Another way to ensure that the hummingbirds will always have a source of nectar is to select plants that have staggered bloom times.

By following these very simple suggestions, you can beatify your yard and effectively attract the hummingbirds. So, don’t let a limited amount of space prevent you from beautifying your yard and attracting the hummingbirds. You will be glad that you discovered how to effectively use hanging baskets and the hummingbirds will also be thrilled with your discovery.

I can tell you from personal experience just how effectively hanging baskets can be used to attract the hummingbirds, because when my mom was still alive we had them all around our yard. The flowers and plants provided our yard with an explosion of bright, vivid colors and the hummingbirds would swarm to them. Another reason my mom loved to use hanging baskets was because she could have such a wide variety of plants all around the yard.

Hanging baskets are an easy and relatively inexpensive way to beautify any yard and they have the added benefit of helping to attract the hummingbird. If you want to attract the hummingbirds in a more natural way, why not give the use of hanging baskets a try?
