Hummingbirds Eat Insects Also

Insects are also an important part of the hummingbird’s diet.  The insects are a vital source of protein.  A hummingbird will eat between 400-500 insects per day.  It also may intrest you to discover that a hummingbird will eat more insects whenever it rains.  I do not have an explaination for why this occurs.

How Long Does the Mirgratory Journey Take?

Have you ever wondered just how long it takes for a hummingbird to complete their migratory journey?  If so, I have the answer for you.  The actual answer depends on how often the hummingbird stops to rest along the way and where they are journying to and where they are returning from.  For example, a journey from the northern United States to the gulf coast would take between 5-10 days to complete depending on the number of stops made along the way.  If the hummingbird tavels as far as Panama it will take the bird about two weeks to complete that journey.  The hummingbirds will remain in warmer climates until it is time for them to once again head north and mate.

Hummingbirds know when to migrate because of something known as photoperiod.  This is when there are changes in the length of daylight and this is signaled by hormonal changes within the hummingbird’s body.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Today is Valentine’s Day.  I hope that all of you have spent the day with someone that you love, whomever they may be.  It is important to let those in our life know how much they mean to us.  I feel very blessed to have so many people in my life that love and care about me, especially my boyfriend Donald.  Life is too short not live it to the fullest extent possible, and for me that means trying to have as few regrets as possible.

Today is also a day of sadness for me as well.  My mom is no longer living, so special days like today make me miss her even more then usual.  Never doubt mom, you will always remain alive in my heart and in my memories.  What I wouldn’t give for one of your hugs or to hear your voice once again…

On this day that we celebrate love, don’t forget to tell those who are important to you how you feel about them.  To all of you who read this blog, I want to thank you for doing so.  Let me hear from you sometime.  Thanks for allowing me to share this with you, even though today’s post isn’t about hummingbirds.

History of the Classification System

It was a Swedish naturalist named Carolus Linnaeus who devised the scientific classification system still in use today (kingdom, phylum, class, order and family).  Hummingbirds were assigned their own family.   It is called Trochilidae, from the Greek trochilos, which means small bird.
