Some Hummingbird Species Numbers Are Declining

According to one recent article that I read, there are several species of hummingbirds which are declining in population. This post will tell you which species these are, try to offer some insight into why this is happening and tell you can help provide a habitat for hummingbirds.

According to the Audubon Society’s Watch List of Rare and/or Declining Birds, the are four species of hummingbirds found there: Allen’s, Costas, Calliope, and Rufous. Over the past 40 years, the Rufous Hummingbird has declined an alarming 58 percent!

The increase in population and urban development is playing a huge role in the loss of the hummingbird’s habitat. Logging efforts can also effect the hummingbirds habitat.

If you want to help the hummingbirds there are many things you can do to ensure that there is an abundant food supply available. These suggestions can be done individually or in combination with each other.

Make sure to make your yard a hummingbird habitat that these birds will want to visit. These suggestions listed below should help you successfully do this.

Your hummingbird garden should have a long season of overlapping bloom. Some plants that do so include the following: petunia, annual red salvia, autumn sage and shrimp plants, or the firebush.

It is always best to plant flowers and plants which are native to your area of the country. You can find out information concerning the specific plants that grown in your area and attract hummingbirds by talking with someone from a plant nursery that is located where you live.

Your flower garden should have areas of sun, partial sun, and shade. If the area of your yard where you want to create the hummingbird habitat is sunny most of the day, then you need to plant trees and shrubs. If the area is entirely in the shade, you will want to open up the area to let large patches of sunlight in. Having areas that allow both sun and shade is necessary to grow a wide variety of plants.

Your flower garden needs to consist of many levels of vegetation. The area should have some tall trees, some medium-height trees, some flowers, some grassy areas, as well as some shrubs. These different levels will provide the hummingbirds a variety of choices of where to feed or where to perch to rest or roost.

You plant a wide variety of flowers, including those that are known to attract hummingbirds as well as others. You should select a variety of flowers that will bloom at different times, because there will always be something flowering. The flowers will serve two very important purposes: they will provide a source of nectar for the hummingbirds, and they will also attract insects on which the birds will feed.

It is also important for your flower garden to have a source of water available for the hummingbirds. The use of a birdbath is one way to do this. The birdbath should have a very shallow water depth to allow the birds to stand in the water if they choose to do so. Adding some small flat rocks to the birdbath will create different water depths within the birdbath.

Having a wide variety of plants will provide the female hummingbird a wide variety of nesting materials from which to choose.

Your hummingbird garden should also contain some perches so the hummingbirds can survey the territory. You might want to create some perches that give the birds a good view over the flowers.

The other thing you can do to provide a food source for the hummingbirds is to place hummingbird feeders throughout your yard. There are several things to keep in mind with regard to the use of hummingbird feeders.

It is very easy to make your own nectar solution by using 1 part white granulated cane sugar to 4 parts water. If you choose to make your own homemade nectar solution, you should bring the solution to a boil for 1 1/2 minutes and then let it cool down. Now you have a mixture much more similar to that of the flower nectar.

Nectar solutions should be changed quite often, about every three days, because hot weather can cause rapid bacterial growth.

It is not necessary to add food coloring, especially if the feeder has a red blossom at the feeding point. Red food coloring is unhealthy for hummingbirds.

Honey should not be used to feed hummingbirds because it attracts bees and favors the growth of a black fungus that causes a fatal liver and tongue disease in hummingbirds.

It is sad that some hummingbird species are declining in population. Those of us who enjoy these beautiful birds can help provide a hummingbird habitat by doing the things mentioned in this post.

The Hummingbird’s Advantage for Nectar Sources

Hummingbirds have many competitors for nectar sources. This includes bees, butterflies and moths. With this in mind, you may be wondering how the hummingbird fares when it comes to gaining access to nectar sources. Well, the hummingbird actually has advantages over some of its competitors when it comes to gaining nectar. This post will explain what gives the hummingbird this advantage over it competitors.

A Hummingbird has the ability to see into into the ultra violet range and they are attracted to red. Bees do not have the ability to see red and therefore they do not compete with the hummingbirds for red flowers.

Also, a lot of the various flowers that are known to attract hummingbirds have no scent. This does not matter to a hummingbird because the hummingbird has no known sense of smell and they are therefore not relying on their sense of smell to attract them to the flowers they choose to visit. When it comes to selecting a food source, what is most important is the quantity and quality of the nectar which is available. Whenever choosing a flower, the hummingbird will select the flower with the highest nectar output and the richest concentration of sugars, regardless of the shape or color of the flower. Also more important than the color of the flower is how the nectar taste.

Butterflies and moths are known to rely and scent a great deal to help them locate their nectar sources. If the flowers do not have a scent then a hummingbird will not have to compete with the butterflies or moths for their food sources.

Hummingbirds of Alabama

A friend of mine and her family live part-time in Alabama and Texas. She wanted to know what species of hummingbirds are found in Alabama. This is what has prompted me to write this particular post.

As is true in many parts of the country, the most common species of hummingbird to be found in Alabama is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. While not as common, you might also find the Rufus Hummingbird.

The next part of this post will give you some information on both the Ruby-throated Hummingbird as well as the Rufus Hummingbird and also attracting these birds to your yard.

When trying to identify a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, here is what to look for to help you do so properly. The males have metallic green backs, blackchins, metallic red throats and white underparts. The females lack the black chins and red throats.

Due to the long journey to cross the Gulf of Mexico, the Ruby-throated hummingbird must gain critical weight before attempting to cross the Gulf of Mexico. As a result, the hummingbirds will nearly double their weight (from about 3.25 grams to 6 grams) before crossing the Gulf of Mexico. The migratory journey can be 500 long and take between 18 and 22 hours to complete.

Today there is an estimated population of over 7 million Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. During the nineteenth century, this particular species of hummingbird was hunted for its beautiful plumage, but it now now enjoys protection from harvest through the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This act declares unlawful the taking, killing, or possessing of migratory birds. It is also listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna of 1975.

The male Rufus Hummingbird has brown on its back, sides, tail and head. The male will also have a reddish colored throat patch, but it will be more orange in color then that of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird.

If you want to attract hummingbirds to your yard, planting flowers is a great way to do so. Trumpet vines, petunias, and salvia are all examples of some plants which are known to attract hummingbirds.

If you are not into gardening, then the use of a hummingbird feeder will work just fine. To make your own homemade nectar solution, mix 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil the solution for about one minute to help dissolve the sugar completely. Let the mixture cool completely and then fill the feeder. It is extremely important that the feeder be kept clean and it should therefore be washed often, at least once a week or more, and the nectar solution changed regularly.

Anyone living in the state of Alabama, you do have hummingbirds found there. It is my hope that this post has told you more about the species found there, plants which are known to attract them, and a bit about using a feeder to attract hummingbirds.

What Causes Nectar to Ferment?

Homemade hummingbird nectar solution will ferment or spoil very quickly. Have you ever wondered what causes this? This post will provide you with the answer and it may even surprise you.

The cause of the fermentation or spoilage of nectar solution is due to the growth of microorganisms which are transported to the feeder on a hummingbird’s bill. It is not due to a problem with the water source you are using, as is often a common misconception held by some people.

Any unused homemade nectar solution can be kept in the icebox for up to a week. Be sure to put it in a container that has been labeled as nectar solution and dated. If in doubt as to if the solution is still good, please use caution and get rid of it and make some fresh nectar solution.

The best way to avoid the fermentation of your homemade nectar solution is to change it often and keep your feeder extremely clean. Also, do not hang your hummingbird feeder in direct sunlight.

A clean feeder is of vital importance to a hummingbird. Which is why I cannot stress enough the need for hummingbird feeders to be cleaned very frequently. Just how often is that? Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned at least every 2-3 days in hot weather or a good rule of thumb is to just wash it each time the feeder must be filled again with fresh nectar solution which ever comes first.

The Calorie Needs of a Hummingbird

The hummingbird is a highly active bird and must eat regularly to meet its energy needs and help ensure its very survival. Does having to eat so frequently throughout the day mean that the hummingbird has a large calorie intake per day? This post will provide you with the answer to this question.

A hummingbird will feed between 5-10 per hour, but each feeding will last between 30-60 in length. In the course of a day, a hummingbird will consume about its weight in sugar water or nectar per day. During a normal day, a hummingbird only needs about 10 calories worth of food to ensure its survival. That’s correct, only 10 calories worth of food per day! The calories can be come in the form of carbohydrates, from sugar water or flower nectar, or fats and proteins, from small insects and spiders.

As you can see from reading this post, a hummingbird requires amazingly few calories to ensure its survival. It would be so nice if the same could also be said about humans!
