The Long Absence Explained

Hello Everyone:

This is Hummingbird here. I am sorry that there has not been any new post in quite sometime, but the reason for it was quite unexpected and could not be avoided; I was hospitalized without warning. In the very early hours of last Wednesday morning, 12:30 a.m. or so, I had a friend call an ambulance to take me to one of our local hospitals. My right leg was extremely swollen, reddish, bruised and hot to the touch and I knew that the apparent condition was beyond my ability to handle and deal with own my own.

After arriving at the hospital, I was taken to the ER where I remained for approximately 11 hours before being seen by a doctor. In the meantime, I was eventually taken to have an ultrasound on the leg to rule out that the problem was the result of a blood clot in the leg. Thankfully, that test came back negative for the blood clot. Now, we were back at ground zero in having any idea what the actual condition may have been. This was not fun, especially since I was in excruciating pain but could have nothing to reduce the level of it until after being seen by the doctor on call.

By the time the doctor on call finally sees me, I have now been there in the ER for approximately 11 hours! That is an eternity when you don’t feel well at all! The ER doctor determined that I had a condition known as Cellulitis, an infection of the blood that is the result of a cut, scratch or bug bite. As a result, I was then admitted to the hospital and given massive doses of IV antibiotics for the next several days.

Yesterday, Monday afternoon, I was finally released from the hospital. Yea! While I am feeling much better then when I was admitted to the hospital, I am not yet back to full strength yet. I am still weak and tire quite easily and even still have some discomfort in my leg and foot. That should all improve in the days ahead.

Sorry for my long absence without any previous warning but the situation was beyond my control and could not have been predicted. Hope you understand.

One more thing, I know that Mother’s Day has passed, but since I wasn’t here to acknowledge it I want to take this belated opportunity to remember and honor the memory of my mother. I miss you not only on Mother’s Day mom but each and every day since you passed away. You are never far from my thoughts. I hope that you know that you were a great mom and that you would be be proud of the women I have become and the life I’ve created for myself.

Mother’s Day 2009 also marked the one year anniversary for this blog. Hummingbirds for Mom was created as a way to combine the love my mom and I shared for hummingbirds with my desire to do so in a unique way that would also allow me to honor my mother’s memory. I think these two things have been accomplished quite well thus far and I look forward to doing it indefinitely into the future.

Thank you to all who visit this blog and I look forward to hearing from you in the future. I just wanted to explain why there were no new post for quite some time. Thanks in advance for your understanding regarding this matter.

The Aggressive Nature of Hummingbirds

If you have hummingbird feeders in your yard then you have undoubtedly witnessed the very aggressive nature of the hummingbirds at your feeders.  There is often a bully that runs all the other birds away in an effort to try and protect "their" feeder.  Why is this?  What can be done about this issue?

It is important to realize that hummingbirds are very territorial in nature.  The males especially will go to great lengths to defend their food source.  This behavior cannot be changed in the hummingbird and it is a survival trait that these birds have.

As a way of combating the aggressive nature of the hummingbirds, it will help if you place multiple hummingbird feeders around your yard that are out of site of each other.  This should solve the problem of the bully because they will be unable to defend every feeder at the same time and this will allow the other birds to feed as well.

Also, the use of plants is a great way to entice the hummingbirds.  By having various plants in your yard that are known to attract hummingbirds you are offering the birds a natural and alternative food souce to the birds rather then just attracting the birds through the use of your feeders.  Some of the birds will feed on the plants in your yard  while others are feeding at the feeders and this will likely increase the number of hummingbirds that visit your yard.

Don’t let the aggressive nature of the hummingbird discourage you from trying to entice these bids into your yard.  While you cannot change this character trait of the hummingbird, there are things that you can do to combat the problem.  It is my hope that this post will offer you some advice as to solve this issue.  Please let me know if you have any suggestions of your own as to how you have successfully addressed this issue.

How lightweight is a Hummingbird Band?

Here is a little known and astounding piece of hummingbird trivia.  It takes an amazing 5,500 hummingbird bands to weigh one ounce.  As a trivia lover and hummingbird enthusiast, I just had to share this obscure fact with all of you.  This piece of trivia would have fascinated my mother also.  Since the birds themselves don’t weigh too much I suppose I shouldn’t be shocked by the very large number of bands required to weigh one ounce, but nevertheless I find myself shaking my head in utter amazement.  What about you?
