Hummingbirds in Oklahoma

Some seven different species of hummingbirds have been documented in Oklahoma. They are the following species:the Black-chinned Hummingbird, the Rufous Hummingbird, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird, the Calliope Hummingbird, the Broad-tailed Hummingbird, the Anna’s Hummingbird and the Green Violet-eared Hummingbird.

The male hummingbirds will begin arriving in Oklahoma about mid-March and the females begin arriving in early April. The hummingbirds will leave the area around mid-October, but rarely you may have the opportunity to see a hummingbird that will choose to winter over in Oklahoma.

I have a number of relatives that live in Oklahoma and this post was written with all of them in mind.So Donna, Jeanie, Sue and gang I hope you find this post informative and useful to you. I hope that this will help them and anyone else discover the species of hummingbirds which are found in the state of Oklahoma.

Happy Birthday, Mom

Dear Mom:

Today is a bittersweet day for me; it would have been your 75Th birthday.  Unfortunately, you passed away at the age of 72 and are therefore no longer with us.  I am sad that you aren’t here with us to celebrate this milestone. The occasion makes me happy because it gives me the opportunity to remember and honor the women who gave birth to me.

You were a great mom!  You always had a way of making all of us feel loved and special.  On each of our birthdays, you would always make each of us a favorite meal and/or desert.  It is impossible for me to select one favorite meal, because I loved so many of your meals!  My favorite desert was always your homemade chocolate cream pie.  No ones ever taste quite as good as yours did!  I can’t help but wonder what favorite meal and desert you would have chosen for your 75Th birthday.  After all, it  would have been a great occasion which needed to be celebrated.  Since you are no longer with us, I’ll have to find my own unique way to mark the occassion in your honor.

I can’t see a hummingbird that it doesn’t make me think of you and your enjoyment of these amazing birds.  Unfortunately, I have yet to see any this spring season.  This has me quite concerned because  they should have begun to appear by now, but their have been far fewer around in recent years.  This makes me quite sad, but there is no one explanation which would explain the decrease in the hummingbird population in southeast Texas.

Just know mom, you are forever in my heart.  I am extremely proud to have been your daughter.  Even now, I still miss you every day.  I couldn’t let the occassion of your birthday go by without remembering it.

The Calliope Hummingbird

Calliope Hummingbird.jpg

The Calliope Hummingbird prefers high mountains, and has been seen as high as 11,000 feet. It builds its nests over creeks or over roads next to streams or lakes. This species of hummingbird will usually repair the previous year’s nest or construct a new nest atop the old nest. This bird usually forages within five feet of the ground.

What is Molting?

The process of molting is when a bird will loose their feathers a few at a time.  This will occur symmetrically or one from each side in order not to affect flight.  The length of the entire process various from either weeks or months depending on the time of year it is occurring and the species of bird.  This process would not be noticeable to the casual birdwatcher.

Hummingbirds will begin to molt between September to November.  It will then take several weeks for each feather to regain its size and shape.

Why is molting necessary?  Molting allows the bird to replace their worn out feathers with new ones.  Feathers are vitally important to the bird.  The feathers help provide weather protection for the bird and in some bird species  (not hummingbirds) the molting process can even help the birds attract a mate.
